Everhardus Johannes Bödeker
Everardus Johannes Bödeker, born Groningen 10 augustus 1823, died after June 1854, son of Johannes [=John] Bödeker and Anna Lucretia van Vliet. Shortly before or in 1853 he became captain of the barque "Luconia". This ship was about 10 years old and made several voyages to the new world under English and German captains, departing from harbours like Liverpool, Antwerp and Rotterdam. In 1853 the ship set sail from England to Australie (Victoria). John Crane Nottage (born 1/3/1821), married Harriet Aslett (born 10/10/1823) in the District of Newington, Kent, England on 4/6/1848. John Crane Nottage trained as an architect before he and his wife, Harriet left England with their two surviving children, Catherine Annie and Robert August James Maskall on board the ship "Luconia". Before reaching Australia, Harriet gave birth to a son and he was named after the Captain of the ship, namely Captain Everhardus J Bodeker. They called their new son, 'Captain' John Bodeker Nottage. 'Captain' John Bodeker Nottage was born at Latitude 39 degrees, 44' South, Longitude 73 degrees, 20' East on Wednesday, 3/5/1854 at 9.30am. The ship arrived on 22/5/1854 at Port Adelaide, South Australia instead of Port Melbourne, Victoria as intended because a serious illness had developed in the family during the voyage and help was available through a close relative, name of James Maskall Nottage, who was a cousin of John Crane Nottage, who had arrived in South Australia on 19/3/1840 on the barque "City of London". The child of John Crane Nottage and Harriet who was sick on board ship was Robert August James Maskall Nottage (born 17/12/1851), who died on 30/8/1854, 3 months after the family arrived in South Australia and is buried in the Walkerville Cemetery, South Australia. John [also known as Jack] married late in life to a Letitia MacIntosh. They lived in Newbridge, Victoria, Australia and he owned a little grocery shop in Clifton Hill. 'Jack' died on 3/5/1919. Note: Above information about "Captain John Bodeker" was kindly supplied by Jan Howard, Australia, a decendant of Johns (Jacks) sister.
He married Dordrecht (near Rotterdam) 18 February 1852 with A.C. van Wijland. In italics is said "Sole statement" This marriage resulted in one child being:
Translation: :Today has died in my house Johannes Everhardus Bodeker, around 4 months old, son of E.J. Bodeker Captain of the ship Luconia" It was signed by J.R. Berghuis probaby a relative. In italics a polite formula that it is a "General statement for in and outside the city" (of Brielle) His wife A.C. van Wijland has been already passed away shorty before, probably as a result of birth complications, at 15 February 1853
"Today passed away to our deepest sorrow mrs A.C. van Wijland, old 20 years, wife of E.J.Bodeker, captain of the ship Luconia. A child was left over old around 5 weeks, leaving closest relatives in deepest sorrow." Again J.R. Berghuis signes the advertisment, and in italics a polite formula stating that "Friends and others should regard this general statement as a private one"
This is a advertisement from the mother of A.C. van Wijland, C. van Wijland-Vliengenthart "For all feelings of sorrow expressed and shared with me, after the depart of my married daughter A.C. van Wijland, wife of E.J. Bodeker at 15th of this month I would express my sincere appreciation". Signed Dordrecht 21th Feb 1853 Above advertisements clearly indicate that E.J. Bodeker was not at home when all these events happened. The family advertisements are found in the collection of the CBG, the Hague. Back to Johannes Bödeker.
